Messages

Messages are MusicXen's private inbox: one-to-one chats and small group

threads with musicians, bands, venues, instructors, and fans. Booking

talk, lesson scheduling, and gig coordination all happen here — never in

public comments.

What you get

  • 1:1 and group conversations (up to 11 people per thread, including you).
  • Read receipts — see who read each message.
  • "Typically replies in ~X" on 1:1 threads, from real reply history.
  • Voice messages — record and send audio clips in any thread.
  • Pinned key terms — pin the important facts (date, pay, address) to

the top of a thread so nobody scrolls for them.

  • Message templates — saved openers and follow-ups for booking mail.
  • Per-show group chats — confirmed shows get a shared thread for the

band, venue, and promoter with the date, venue, and agreed pay

auto-pinned.

How to use it

  1. Open Messages in the nav to see your inbox (unread count shows in

the header).

  1. Click Compose to start a new thread — pick people from your

contacts or search by name.

  1. In a thread, type and send. Attach a voice message with the mic

button. Pin key terms with the pin control at the top.

  1. For booking outreach, open the template picker to start from a

saved template instead of a blank box.

  1. Show chats appear automatically on confirmed shows — open the show

page and click Show chat.

Tips

  • Pin the deal points (date, load-in, pay) the moment they're agreed

— future-you will thank present-you.

  • Use templates for first contact with venues; a complete, polite

opener gets answered more than "yo u booking?".

  • Watch the reply-time label before double-texting someone — if they

typically reply in two days, give them two days.

  • Booking threads show pay-protection tips — read them before money

talk with someone new.

Safety notes

  • Adults can't start threads with minors (replies are fine), and contact

details are blocked both ways in threads involving minors.

  • Blocking someone hides you from them everywhere and shuts down all

contact, including messages.

  • Never send deposits or pay "booking fees" through chat — real venues

don't operate that way. See Pay protection & scam awareness.

Reactions, replies, editing, and themes

  • React to any message with the reaction picker — one reaction per

person per message; tap your own again to remove it.

  • Reply quotes the message you're answering, and the quote jumps

back to the original.

  • Edit your own message within 15 minutes (it gets an "edited"

label), or delete it for everyone — it becomes a tombstone.

Any message (yours or someone else's) can also be **deleted just

for you**: it vanishes from your view only, and everyone else

keeps seeing it. See the Trash section below.

  • Seen indicators show who has read up to where, live. Turn read

receipts off in Settings → Messaging, or just for one thread in

that thread's settings. Fair's fair: with your receipts off, you

don't see other people's either.

  • Typing indicators show while someone writes; you can hide your

own typing the same way.

  • Themes give each conversation its own colors — pick one in the

thread's settings; everyone in the thread sees it.

  • Mute a thread in its settings to silence its unread badges.

Search, polls, mentions, and attachments

  • Search — the 🔎 box on the Messages page searches all your

conversations; the one at the top of a thread searches just that

thread. Results jump straight to the message. Deleted messages

never show up in search.

  • Polls — 📊 New poll in any chat: a question plus 2–6 options,

one per line. Anyone in the chat can vote and change their vote

while the poll is open; it can close itself after an hour, a day,

or a week, and whoever made it can close it early.

  • @mentions — type @username to mention someone in the chat.

They get a notification (even if the thread is muted) and an @

badge in their inbox, and the mention is highlighted in the

thread. Only people in the conversation can be mentioned.

  • Attachments — 📎 Photo or file under the reply box sends

pictures (jpg, png, gif, webp) or files (pdf, txt, md, csv, doc,

docx, odt, zip) up to 25 MB, with an optional caption.

Finding things again: pins, snooze, drafts, scheduling

  • Pin a message (📌 on any message) to keep it at the top of

the thread — different from pinned key terms, this keeps the

actual message one tap away. Up to 10 per thread.

  • Mark as unread in the conversation settings when you want the

unread badge back as a reminder. (It doesn't unsend read

receipts you've already given.)

  • Snooze a conversation for an hour, 8 hours, a day, or a

week: it leaves your main inbox and shows no badges until it

wakes up. Find snoozed threads under 💤 Snoozed in Messages.

  • Drafts save themselves — start a reply, wander off, and it's

waiting in the thread (and marked "Draft" in your inbox) on any

device. Sending clears it.

  • Schedule a message with 🕐 in the thread: write it now, pick

when it should send (up to 30 days out, your local time). Your

pending scheduled messages are listed in the thread and can be

cancelled until they send.

  • Inbox filters at the top of Messages: All, 🎭 Shows (just

show chats), 👥 Groups, ● Unread, 💤 Snoozed.

Deleting messages and the Trash

  • Delete for everyone removes your message from the whole

thread — everyone sees "This message was deleted" in its place.

  • Delete for me hides a message from your view only. Anyone

can do this to any message in a thread they're in; everyone else

keeps seeing the message normally. It's permanent: the message

stays out of your thread, search, exports, and unread counts for

good.

  • Trash (linked at the top of Messages) is where your deleted

messages land, each labeled with which kind of delete it was.

Only you can see your Trash. Entries are kept for 30 days, then

permanently erased — for "everyone" deletes that means the text

and any attached file or voice clip are destroyed for real. You

can also empty the Trash or erase single entries anytime.

(One exception: if a message was reported, its text is kept

privately as evidence for the moderation team even after it

leaves your Trash.)

Groups, export, and forwarding

  • Add people to any conversation from its settings. Adding

someone to a one-to-one chat turns it into a group chat, and the

thread posts a note saying who was added.

  • Name the group — and rename or clear the name anytime — from

the same settings panel. Anyone in the group can do it; the

change posts a note in the chat. One-to-one chats can't be

named; they just show the other person.

  • Remove people, or leave: the settings panel lists everyone

in the group. Removing someone cuts their access right away

(their past messages stay in the history), and you can leave a

group yourself the same way. If two people are left, the thread

becomes a normal one-to-one chat again.

  • Export a conversation — the whole thing, or only the messages

you pick with Select messages… — as a text file, Markdown, a

web page, JSON, or a spreadsheet (CSV). Deleted messages export as

tombstones; their original text never leaves the site.

  • Forward any message (or a selected batch) to another

conversation or to someone new. The copy is labeled "Forwarded

from" with the original sender's name. Deleted messages can't be

forwarded.

Troubleshooting

I can't message someone. They may have blocked you, or age-gating

may apply. Group threads cap at 11 people including you.

My voice message won't send. MP3, OGG, M4A, or WebM. Keep it short —

very long clips can time out on slow connections.

Notifications aren't arriving. MusicXen notifications are in-app

only (no email or SMS) — the unread badge in the header is the signal.

Open Messages to catch up.
