Age-gated messaging

MusicXen lets musicians of all ages use the site — including minors —

so messaging has extra rules when anyone under 18 is involved.

The rules

  • Adults can't start a conversation with a minor out of the blue.

If you're 18+ and they've never messaged you, there's no "new message"

to them — not even from the API.

  • Minors can message anyone. If a minor messages first, the adult can

reply in that thread. Replies are never blocked.

  • No contact details in threads with minors. Phone numbers and email

addresses are blocked both directions — minors can't share theirs, and

adults can't share theirs. Keep communication on MusicXen.

These are enforced server-side — the web page and the API enforce the

same rules, so there's no way around them in a client.

Date of birth

Your date of birth is collected at signup and editable in

Edit profile → Date of birth — type it (dashes are added automatically)

or pick it from the calendar. It's only used to apply these age-safety

rules; it isn't shown publicly. If you leave it blank, the site treats you

as an adult — which means don't leave it blank if you're under 18.

Troubleshooting

  • "You can't start a conversation with someone under 18."

They need to message you first. If you have a legitimate reason to reach

them (a band audition, a venue booking), ask a mutual contact or have

them message you from their profile.
